5533 sanat mekanı İstanbul' da, Türkiye'den ve Almanya'dan küratör ve sanatçıların katılımıyla düzenlenen “site-specific” sanat üzerine bir workshop eşzamanlı olarak D21 sanat mekanına Livestream aktarılacak ve hem workshop hem de onun çıktıları, günlük olarak çapını genişleterek, D21 sanat mekanında sergilenecek. Alışılageldik biçimde, bitmiş bir sürecin kalıntılarıyla yüzleştirilen ziyaretçi, bunun aksine D21 sanat mekanına süreç olarak akümüle edilen sergiyi gözlemleyip katılım sağlayabilecek. Serginin bulunduğu süre zarfında 5533 ve D21 sanat mekanlarında yapılacak konferanslar ve performanslar her iki mekanda da deneyimlenebilecek biçimde organize edilecek.

Bu workshop, “site-specific” sanatın potansiyellerini ve mekanın, içinde bulunduğumuz toplumlardaki anlamını, şimdiye kadarki politika ve kimliklerimizin hareket kabiliyetini sorguya açarak inceliyor.

Sanatçılar politik öznenin belli bir oluş biçimini, apayrı bir mekandaki çalışmaları aracılığıyla tematize edebilirler mi? Bu oluş biçiminin 'öteki'ne aktarılması talebinde bulunabilir mi?

The "Taking Site!" project will consist of a workshop about site-specificity with participants at 5533 Istanbul between April 21 and May 04, 2013 and a simultaneous exhibition "in progress" at D21 art space Leipzig. Artists and curators from Turkey, Germany, China, USA and Russia will meet at 5533, broaching the issue of their experiences and the problematics of site, in theory and practice. Via livestream the spaces are connected and lectures and performances can be experienced by the public at 5533 and D21 art space. Rather than showing relicts of a finished process, the exhibition at D21 art space will accumulate in a process.

The workshop is seeking for the potential of site-specific art. Our current concepts of society, nation and city rely on sedentariness, but today´s increasing mobility challenges these concepts. Tourists and migrants are generally relieved from rights and duties of a governmental politic. Political subjectivity usually vanishes with the liberation of site.A status as a political subject – can this issue be raised, claimed and transferred to others, by artists and their work at an «alien» place? What could be site-specificity today?  

"Taking Site!" is a cooperation between 5533 art space Istanbul and D21 Kunstraum Leipzig.

Bütün Bunları Düşünürken…

Gülçin Aksoy ve Nancy Atakan bir yıl boyunca, Liverpool’lu bir kadın sanatçı topluluğu ile işbirliği içerisindeydiler. Bu süreçte çalışmaları ile eşzamanlı üç farklı yayından oluşan bir seri çıkardılar ve Liverpool bienaline paralel etkinlik olarak bir sergi açtılar. Ortak nokta, uzak coğrafyalardaki sanatçıların işbirliğini denemeleri üzerineydi. Aynı zamanda yaşadıkları coğrafyaların karşıtlığı, davranış biçimleri, sanatı, sanatçıyı algılayış biçimleri, sanat pratikleri konuları tartışma ve deneyimleme alanları içeresindeydi.

Bir yıl süren araştırmaları sonucu, kendi hayat deneyimlerini de ele alarak, kişisel çalışmalarını açımlamaya başladılar. Aksoy ve Atakan kendi kişisel pratiklerini incelediklerinde, küresel sistemin dolaşım politikalarına  farklı  yönlerden yaklaşsalar bile sorunun ortak olduğunu fark ettiler. Liverpool’da gösterdikleri işlerle birlikte, çalışmalarının kesişim noktası olan ortak projeyi, “İnsan Durdurulur Nesne Gezdirilir” başlıklı sergide sunacaklar.

Ayrıca sergi ile bağlantılı olarak aşağıdaki konuları tartışmak üzere bir oturum gerçekleştirmek istemektedirler:

Modern dünya görüşü, özgürlük projesi üreten bir dünyaydı. Projenin çökmesi, sayısız bölünmeye yol açtı. Sağa sola salınan savrulan, kendinden merkezli, güç birlikçi bölünmeler. Bir çok kavramla birlikte özgürlük kavramının anlamı da değişti. Belki de bu yüzden tarih yeniden ele alınıyor; bugünü yeniden yorumlamak için ­‘geçmiş’ bir zemin oluşturuyor. Bu zeminin kimin tarafından belirleneceği önemli bir soru. Mağdurun tarih yazdığı pek görülmemiştir. Tarih yazımı bugüne dek merkez düşüncenin etrafında şekillenmiştir. Araştırma temelli sergilerin, kendine has yöntemleri kullanarak yapılması ve bu tür sergilerin çoğalması bugün merkez düşüncenin ekseninin kaymaya başladığına mı işaret eder. Kişisel tarihimizi, kendi bakış açımızdan, kendimiz yazabilir miyiz?

Katılıma açık bu oturumda, yukarıdaki konuları tartışmak üzere sizleri 6 Nisan, Cumartesi günü saat 15:00-17:00 arası 5533’e davet ediyoruz.

“While thinking about all of this…”

For the past year, Gülçin Aksoy and Nancy Atakan collaborated with a Liverpool women artist’s group, Trading Stations. The aim was to experiment with potential models for inter-regional artistic collaboration. During this process, they dealt with concepts regarding contrasts between life styles, behavior patterns, art definitions, artistic perceptions, and artistic practices. As an answer to many questions that arose from their experiences working in the Trading Stations project, Aksoy and Atakan co-produced an artwork that will be presented in the 5533 exhibition, “Retaining People, Circulating Objects”, in addition to examples of their individual research-based artwork.

Perhaps the present increase in research-based exhibitions using innovative methodology indicates the slippage of power axes. The Modern worldview promoted the idea of freedom. As this system fell apart, the world fragmented; chaos, innumerable clashes, and the collapse of hegemonies resulted.  Along with many other concepts, the meaning of freedom changed. To interpret the present, the platform about the ‘past’ must be re-formulated. The important question seems to be who is now ‘free’ to help determine this platform? Until the present, history has been written in accordance with the thoughts of those in power; the defeated, the weak, those from the periphery have rarely had a chance to present their viewpoint. The important question for us is: Can Turkish artists and intellectuals now help write their own history from their own perspective?

We invite the public to join us on Saturday April 6th between 15:00 and 17:00 at 5533 to discuss these issues and investigate different artistic research-based approaches.

İnsan Durdurulur, Nesne Gezdirilir. - Retaining People, Circulating Objects

“İnsan Durdurulur, Nesne Gezdirilir.”

Bir yıldan fazla bir süredir Gülçin Aksoy ve Nancy Atakan Trading Station projesi nedeniyle yeniden bir araya geldiler. Trading Station, beş Liverpool’lu kadın sanatçının oluşturduğu bir projedir. Proje boyunca,  katılan sanatçılar ile birlikte, Liverpool/İstanbul arasında gidip gelinerek  ve internet üzerinden  üç adet yayın gerçekleştirdiler. Ayrıca Curve Galeri’de 2012 Liverpool Bienali’ne paralel etkinlik olarak grup sergisi açtılar. 

5533 mekanında yer alacak ‘İnsan durdurulur, nesne gezdirilir’ adlı sergide, sanatçılar, bu süreçte dert edindikleri bazı soruları  ortaya çıkaran  ortak bir yapıt sunacaklar. Bunun yanı sıra kendi kişisel araştırmalarının sonuçlarını da  sunacaklar.  Gülçin Aksoy ve Nancy Atakan günümüz insanını kontrol eden güçleri,  kendi yöntemlerince sorguluyorlar. Aksoy,  bürokrasi bahanesi ile manipüle edilen, yorucu dışsal süreci kendi deneyimi üzerinden yorumluyor. Atakan ise uluslararası büyük şirketlerin ürettiği nesneleri sınırsız olarak dünyanın her yerine gönderebilme serbestisinden hareket ediyor. Bu iki ele alış biçiminden birinde, insanın hareketi kısıtlanırken, diğerinde nesnelerin dünyanın her köşesine ulaşabilmesi,  ‘İnsanın  durdurulur, nesnenin  gezdirilebilir ‘ olma karşıtlığını ele alıyorlar.  Süreçten bir kesit olan bu bölüm, bir sonuca değil,  bir aralığa işaret ediyor.

Sergi açılışı 23 Mart 15:00-19:00 Cumartesi günü yapılacak. 6 Nisan Cumartesi gününe kadar Perşembe, Cuma, ve Cumartesi öğleden sonraları devam edecek.

Ayrıca, 6 Nisan Cumartesi 15:00-17:00 arasında, , Prof Dr. Leyla Neyzi, Filiz Avunduk,  Asena Günal, Merve Elveren, Ayfer Karabıyık ve  sanatçıların katılımıyla ‘Bütün Bunları Düşünürken’ adlı bir oturum düzenlenecektir.

 “Retaining People, Circulating Objects”

Collaborating again after several years, Gülçin Aksoy and Nancy Atakan have  worked for more than a year with five woman from Liverpool in a project entitled Trading Stations. Artists from respective cities traveled between Istanbul and Liverpool and worked online to produce three magazines accompanying their research based exhibition at the Curve Gallery in an event parallel to the 2012 Liverpool Biennial. 

As an answer to many questions that arose from their experiences working in Trading Stations, Aksoy and Atakan co-produced an artwork that will be presented in a new exhibition entitled, “Retaining People, Circulating Objects”, at 5533.  This exhibition will also entail their individual research on types of power systems that control human interaction and mobility. While Aksoy uses bureaucracy as a lens to investigate these processes, Atakan focuses on the international production of commodities to present everyday frustrations and personal narratives.  In today’s globalized world where objects freely circulate, Aksoy and Atakan problematize the often unsurmountable barriers non-westerners face with movement restrictions.

Opening: Saturday, March 23 between 15:00 and 19:00.  It will continue on Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons until April 6.

The «taking site!» project will consist of a workshop with participants at 5533 art space in Istanbul between April 18 and May 03, 2013, with the results and processes being simultaneously exhibited at D21 Kunstraum in Leipzig.  

The meaning of the term site-specificity in the field of art has changed essentially within the last decades. Emerging in the 1960s as a renunciation of a self-contained, transportable, therefore commodity-like artwork, site-specificity allowed the artwork to relate to its environment. Influences of institutional critique transformed this definition of site-specific art. Eventually, the site was defined not only by the physical environment of the space, but also by the social communities with their hierarchies and economic situations. The community, often understood as the marginalized and underprivileged, became the new focus of site-specific artworks. Concomitantly, the appearance of the artworks changed from aesthetic objects into predominantly process focused events that were merely temporary in the space.

Our current concepts of society, nation and city rely on sedentariness, but today’s increasing mobility challenges these concepts. Tourists and migrants are generally relieved from rights and duties of a governmental politic. Indeed, this de-territorialization does have liberating effects. Miwon Kwon notes in «One place after another» that the limitations of an identity, which is determined and normalized by a site, can be replaced by the production of multiple identities, flexible bonds and meanings. However, as the site-specific bonds are released, the status as a political subject also vanishes. 

The working conditions of artists are nowadays nomadic and project-related. Residency programs support and demand mobility and simultaneously an examination of the site, where the artists sojourn temporarily. What can artists understand about a site where they just stay only temporarily? Are their experiences not always mediatized with Internet research and interaction with on-site institutions? Faced with the last remnants of differences in cities – how can the artist refrain from reproducing an image of the exotic other and avoid forcing a fixed identity on the community?

A status as a political subject – can this issue be raised, claimed and transferred to others, by 

artists and their work at an «alien» place? What could be site-specificity today?

The jury consists of members of D21, 5533 and independent artists. Eight artists/researchers will be chosen in the middle of February 2013. The selected participants will be informed immediately following the jury meeting. Artists/researchers not chosen for the exhibition will be notified per email shortly thereafter. 

We are working on financing travel costs and accomodations for the travelling participants. Production costs of artworks during the workshop/ exhibition will be covered. The secure financial circumstances will be announced in March 2013.

«Taking Site!» is a cooperation between 5533 art space Istanbul and D21 Kunstraum Leipzig.

D21 Kunstraum was founded in 2006 to show an international program of contemporary art, especially new media, installation and performance in Leipzig. The space is run by members of the D21 Association.

Art Barter 5. Uluslararası sergisini Filiz Avunduk işbirliğiyle 5533’te gerçekleştiriyor. Art Barter’in İstanbul ayağında, sanat eserleri üzerinden takas kavramını deneyimlemek üzere, bir çok sanatçının eseri, 5533’te sergilenecektir. Proje, sanatın mevcut değiş tokuş sistemini yeniden irdeleyerek, para yerine mal ve hizmetlerle takas edilmesi için bir ortam yaratmaktadır. 

2009 yılının başlarında, insanların istekleri ve ihtiyaç duydukları şeyleri elde etme yöntemlerinde bir kayma olduğunu fark eden küratörler, Alix Janta-Polczynski ve Lauren Jones, Art Barter projesini başlattılar. Londra’da gerçekleşen ‘free shop’ ve ‘freecycle’ gibi projelerin yaygınlığı ve yine Londra’da gerçekleşen Royal College of Arts’ın gizli kartpostal açık arttırması; izleyiciye, takas yoluyla sanat eserlerine sahip olabilme fırsatı sunan ve alternatif bir platform oluşturan Art Barter projesinin oluşumuna ilham vermiştir.

Sanatçılar, takas kavramına her zaman aşina olmuşlardır. Ancak, Art Barter etkinliği, güncel sanat pazarında bu türden bir takas biçimini ön plana çıkarması ve bu proje çerçevesinde süregelen ilişkiler bakımından özgündür.

Art Barter’in İstanbul ayağı, projenin konseptine uygun olarak, İstanbul Manifaturacılar Çarşısı’nda (İMÇ), eskiden bir dükkan olarak kullanılan ve daha sonra sanat mekanına dönüştürülen 5533’te gerçekleşiyor. Eskiden ticari bir mekan olan 5533, çeşitli sanatsal formları, elitist olmayan bir atmosferde ziyaretçiler, sanatçılar ve İMÇ sakinleri için bir “temas alanına” dönüştürülmüştür. Araştırma ve tartışma için olanaklar sunan bağımsız bir mekan olarak, 5533, video gösterileri, performanslar ve çağdaş sanat sergilerine ev sahipliği yapmaktadır.

Bu sergide, eserler sanatçı isimleri olmadan sergilenmektedir ve izleyici eserle başbaşa bırakılmaktadır. Eserin sadece takasla alınabiliyor olması da, izleyiciyi, sanatçılara sunabileceği ne gibi özgün şeyler olduğunu düşünmeye sevk etmektedir.

Önceki Art Barter’lerde, sanatçıların, eserlerini, 6 ay İtalyanca dersi, 3 ay psikoterapi, 30 saat refleksoloji, web sayfası dizaynı, beyaz bir at üzerinde gezinti deneyimi, bahçıvanlık dersleri, bir yıl boyunca ayda bir şiir ve bir kadının, sanatçının çocuğunu taşımayı önermesinden, ömür boyu peynir tedarikine kadar değişen yaratıcı teklifler karşılığında takas ettikleri görülmüştür.

Kasım 2009’da başarılı bir şekilde başlatılmasının ardından, Art Barter, Berlin, New York ve Madrid’de sergilerin yanı sıra, 2010 ve 2012’de, Frieze Sanat Fuarı ile eş zamanlı olarak Londra’da iki Mini Barter sergisine de ev sahipliği yapmıştır.

Projenin işleyişi...
Her eser, sanatçı ismiyle sergilenmektense numaralandırılmaktadır. İzleyiciler diledikleri eserlere sahip olmak için teklif formlarına tekliflerini yazarlar. Daha sonra, bu formlar, gizliliği korumak için mekan içerisinde bulunan teklif kutusunun içine atılır. Serginin sonunda sanatçılar, eserleri için verilen tüm teklifler arasında seçim yaparak, eserlerini hangi teklif karşılığında takas etmek istediklerine (eğer teklif sanatçıyı ikna ederse) karar verirler.

Art Barter is collaborating with Filiz Avunduk to host its 5. International show in Istanbul at 5533. Art Barter will show works by a range of artists, from emerging to established, to enable a distinct mode of interaction and exchange through works of art. Re-examining our current system of exhange, the project encourages the trade of art for goods and services instead of money.

Early in 2009, curators Alix Janta-Polczynski and Lauren Jones grew aware of a shift in how people obtained wants or needs. Projects such as ‘the free shop’ and ‘freecycle’ were prevalent in London and the exchange of skills between friends and businesses were once again on the rise. Inspired by these and other initiatives, Janta-Polczynski and Jones formed Art Barter as an alternative platform to create an environment where the viewer always has a chance to acquire the works on display.

Artists have always been familiar with the use of barter worldwide, however, the Art Barter schema is distinct in its promotion of such a form of exchange in the current art market and in the lasting working relationships that are being born out of the project.

This edition of Art Barter is befittingly located at 5533 in the Istanbul Textile Traders’ Market (IMC). 5533 turned a former commercial environment into a ‘contact zone’ where visitors from different backgrounds, professions, and communities interact with IMC inhabitants to experience various artistic forms in a non-exclusive and non-elitist atmosphere. As an independent space for research and discussion, 5533 hosts video screenings, performances and contemporary art exhibitions.

At Art Barter, the names of the artists are not displayed along with the artworks; the viewer values the art for its own sake without being predisposed to a name or a price tag. Having to barter also motivates the viewer to think about what they have that is unique to offer the artists.

Previous Art Barters have seen artists exchange their works for 6 months of Italian lessons, 3 months of psychotherapy, 30 hours of reflexology, website design, a gallop on a white horse, gardening lessons, a poem for each month of a year and other creative offers ranging from a woman offering to bear the artist’s child to one promising a life time of cheese supply.

Following its successful launch in London in November 2009, the project has gone on to host shows in Berlin, New York, and Madrid, as well as two Mini Barter shows in London to coincide with Frieze Art Fair in 2010 and 2012.

The way it works...
Each artist's work is displayed in the exhibition with a number next to it. Viewers are invited to fill out barter forms with their offers on any work that they desire. These offers are then pinned on a communal board or placed on a box to protect the privacy of the bid. At the end of the show, the artists will choose from all the offers made on their work and will decide which (if any) offer they would like to exchange their work for.
