“Olmuş olmamış”, sanatsal emeğin farklı ürünlerini müzakereye
açan bir sergi. Sanatçının nesne üretmesi, yazı yazması, performans yapması
veya üretmemeyi seçmesi birbirinden nasıl ayrılabilir? Merve Ünsal’ın tek kişilik
sergisi, bu soruyu fotoğraf, video, neon ve sanatçı kitabı işleri üzerinden ele
alıyor.
Özerklik, arzu ve müelliflik kavramlarından yola çıkan sergi
–meydana gelmek, tamamlanmak, olgunlaşmak, bitirmek gibi fikirleri çağrıştıran–
‘olmak’ kavramı etrafında dolaşıyor. “Olmuş olmamış” sadece Merve’nin kendi
pratiğiyle yüzleşmesinden ibaret değil; aynı zamanda izleyiciyi sanattaki değer
sisteminin ve kurallarının nasıl kabul gördüğü, içselleştirildiği ya da gerektiğinde
askıya alındığını sorgulamaya davet eden bir seçki.
“Olmuş olmamış”ın kurcaladığı başka bir konu ise sanatın değişim
değeri. İlk defa beraber sergilenen çalışmaların hepsine aynı parasal değeri
biçen Merve, mecra, ebat, malzeme, zaman gibi etkenleri eleyerek işler arasında
denklik kuruyor. Sanatçı bu seçkideki her işini parasal karşılığı standartlaştırılan
sergi yazıları kadar fiyatlandırarak kendine özgü bir değer sistemi yaratıyor.
Sergi, sanatçının yazar ve küratör Özge Ersoy’la beş yılı aşkın
süredir devam eden işbirliğinin bir ürünü. Bugüne kadar iki yayın projesini
beraber yürüten ikili, yazarak ve tartışarak birbirinin üretimini beslemeye
devam ediyor. “Olmuş olmamış” ise Merve’nin sanat pratiğini sergi yoluyla ele
aldıkları ilk proje.

Merve Ünsal (d. 1985, Lahey) İstanbul’da yaşıyor. Sanatsal
üretimin tanımları üzerine çalışan sanatçı, bu konuyu hem buluntu kelime ve
görselleri kullanarak ele almaya, hem de yazar ve editör olarak incelemeye
devam ediyor. Sanatçı merkezli online bir yayın projesi olan m-est.org’un
kurucusu olan Merve, Kanada’da yer alan Banff Görsel Sanatlar Merkezi’nin
misafirlik programına iki defa katıldı. Lisans eğitimini Princeton Üniversitesi
Sanat ve Arkeoloji Bölümü’nde, yüksek lisansını ise Parsons The New School for
Design’daki Fotoğraf ve Fotoğrafla İlişkili Mecralar Bölümü’nde tamamladı.
İstanbul Manifaturacılar Çarşısı’nda (İMÇ) bulunan 5533, araştırma
ve tartışma için olanaklar sunan, film gösterimleri, performanslar ve güncel
sanat sergilerine ev sahipliği yapan bağımsız bir sanat mekanıdır. Eskiden
ticari bir mekan olan 5533, Nancy Atakan ve Volkan Aslan tarafından 2007 yılında
deneysel bir sanat alanına dönüştürülmüştür.

"Almost done" is an exhibition that opens up various
products of artistic labor for negotiation. Is it possible to distinguish
between an artist's production of objects, writing, performing or choosing not
to produce? Merve Ünsal, in her one-person exhibition, considers this question
through her works that take the form of photography, video, neon, and artist's
book.
The exhibition departs from the concepts of autonomy, desire and
authorship, and wanders around the concept of ‘becoming’—evoking ideas such as
becoming, finishing, maturing, or completion. The grouping of the works is not
simply an effort to reckon with Merve’s own practice; it’s also an invitation
to think about how the rules of value creation are justified, internalized,
distorted or suspended, if needed.
"Almost done" also deals with art's exchange value.
Merve assigns the same price to all the works, exhibited together for the first
time at 5533. She thus eliminates factors such as medium, size, material, and
time—leveling the works. And she creates an idiosyncratic value system by
pricing the works on display at the standardized writer fee for an exhibition essay.
“Almost done” has been developed as the result of an ongoing
conversation with Özge Ersoy, a writer and curator Merve has been closely
working with over the last five years. The two have collaborated on two
publication projects, affecting each other's production through various forms
of writings and discussions. “Almost Done” is the first time the two are
negotiating Merve’s practice in an exhibition format.

Merve Ünsal (b. 1985, The Hague) is an artist based in Istanbul.
The artist traces definitions of artistic production using found text and
images; she also deals with this subject as a writer and as an editor. She is
the founding editor of the artist-driven publication m-est.org, and has participated twice in Banff
Centre Visual Arts Residencies. She received her MFA from Parsons The New
School for Design in Photography and Related Media and her BA from Princeton
University in Art and Archaeology.
Located at the Istanbul Textile Traders’ Market (IMC), 5533 is
an independent space for research and discussion that hosts and organizes
screenings, performances, and contemporary art exhibitions. Formerly a
commercial shop, 5533 was rearranged to be used as an experimental art space by
Nancy Atakan and Volkan Aslan in 2007.
